PP: One Last goodbye.. by straightfromcamera PP: One Last goodbye.. by straightfromcamera
An old friend Ryan (~lennypoole) has been in recent talks with Sanctuary records to have his first studio album produced!

We went through a few ideas, and came up with some interesting concepts.

Listen to Pur Pale

__________
Sigma 18-50/2.8

2x Ab800
1 - behind his head, full power
1 - facing straight on, 1/16 - 1/8

I was standing on a milk crate cause ryan is like 6'5"

Taken in my makeshift studio
___________
Edits:
Raw conversion and minimal patching ( creases in bg )
Levels, Sharpening, contrast +

Like MyPrivateParty mentioned already, the spot in the back should be more centered. I'm actually still not sure about the result but this stronger light in his neck is kind of distracting.
I like the fragments on the right, you can see that it's no PS addition.

The mood definitely fits to the character and you catched him in a right moment.

All in all nice work!

Thanks so much :)

Yeah, i wanted to get the jacket (also black) to stand out a little from the background, rather than have the head uniformly rimlit from behind

That explains some things and seen from this point of view you made a good job.

Keep up the great studio work, I'm interested where you improve to with the time. :)

He looks like Johnny Cash... Ok, maybe not.

I'm kind of liking the little dusty speckles, but I think they could be more defined and have more of them.

I also like rimlights, if you couldn't tell from some of my own work ;)

I love this shot! I for one don't believe that the lighting has to be text book to make a great image. As long as you capture what you’re looking for. After all photography is an art.

I'm a big fan of low light, high contrast imagery.

Keep it up.

Ok, nice attempt, but i think the results are rather weak.

I think that the backlight is too strong, and the light coming in from above and left slightly in front of him is too weak. Kick me in the balls if I'm wrong, but it looks like you but the white reflection dot on his eye after the fact in PS.

I think you should drop the forelight a bit, more even with his head and bring it around closer to the camera instead of off to the side and bump it up at least one stop.

His head blends in with the background too much, making it look like his hair melts into the black behind him which i doubt was your intention, either way it's annoying.

Also, but that backlight more directly behind him instead of off to the site, that would help define the rest of his head against the background.

It does look like the white dot was added in photoshop, but infact i was considering removing it in PS..

I agree with your comments, im going to try more soon.. Im thinking about bringing exposure up a little, but dA seems to be changing the image from the original exposure.

I dunno why, but this picture reminds me of Johnny Cash. I can't say why, at least Ryan does not really look like Johnny Cash.

Either way it's a great shot. I like it. :)

Have I told you are made of win? You are.

This is a brilliant portrait. Not overdone in any way, no massive drama, just perfect backlighting and detail.
