I'm very often guilty of the peace sign too
And I'm not of asian descent... nor have I even been to asia 
A brief story:
I just visited Vancouver the other week... and I'm sorta new to the whole 'big city' thing and mass transportation. Oh... and I have absolutely no navigation abilities whatsoever. So yeah... I ended up in gastown when I was trying to get to the aquarium
Eventually I gave up and got a taxi to save me
