Where to find me and my work on the web...

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 1, 2013, 6:37 PM

The photograph itself doesn't interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality.

I haven't been sharing a lot here on deviantART, as many of you know because of the lack of community felt here recently.  I don't think it's a stretch to say things have changed and that this isn't the artistic hub it was a few years ago.  Mind you, many improvements have been made, it's just that so many people who I personally interacted with are no longer updating their work here.

You're able to find me online and follow my new work as it happens on my facebook fan page.   Head on over and click LIKE because I am hoping to do some sort of giveaway soon.

Thank's as always to those of you following me.  I hope to see you at my facebook page!

New York.

Heading tomorrow.

I had to keep the whole thing a secret from my roommate, who is appearing on a TV show called Operation Vacation.  The secret has been going on for about 3 months, and I have known I would go with him for about two.

His work is here - bryanmollett.tumblr.com/

Stoked.

If anyone wants to pre-buy a print, $50 (shipping in) for a HAND PRINTED IN DARKROOM print, signed on the back.

scott.obsidianfox@ gmail.com (no space) - Paypal.

I will check back in after. Until then, Ciao.

I am on the Facebook!

Hey guys.  Try as I might, I don't have a lot of time for deviantART much any more.  I post quite regularly on facebook, so anyone who wants to follow my new work, which is mainly film, head on over and add me - write a message under your friend request with your dA name as well, so I know!

Spent 5 hours in total bringing the 5 year old iMac into the Apple store, three of which dealing directly with a Genius, and I must say, after originally throwing a little bit of a fit over the crash, I think I am generally better off for it.  (Note, the 'fit' was about other stuff too.. ;) )

I have a newer machine, but there is something about this old slowing down beast that is just too familiar.

Oh, and I am going to be printing in the darkroom soon.  Any requests for prints?

Looks like another contest...

I've been entering contests like crazy, apparently.

This one is for a trip to New York City for two days, plus I would get to shoot Roger Waters performing THE WALL LIVE, Pink Floyd's best (arguably) and most famous album.

Looks like I can't claim my own name in dA's name change thing, as scottalexander and scott-alexander are both taken by dead accounts.

Whatevs.

Thank you all who voted for my images in that contest for a trip to africa.  I didn't have enough votes to make the top 10, but that is ok.

A few days ago, on the cusp of a contest deadline, I entered 3 images into a photography contest where the grand prize is a trip to Africa.  Uganda to be exact.

I have always wanted to photograph in Africa, as early as I could remember.  Though, probably for different reasons when I was little (big fan of the jungle book and Tarzan)

To win the contest, I first have to be in the top 10 as chosen by ANYONE with a facebook account, then a panel of Canadian Photojournalists pick from those 10.

This is a call to all my readers to help out with a LIKE on three images.

The best part is, you don't need to sign up for anything or like any pages, and no one will EVER send you junk mail for doing this

The images are"

I have until May 16th to get as many likes as possible across the three photos to put me into the finals.

If you 'vote' please post here to let me know!

If you're able to SHARE the photos amongst your friends on FB, That would be even more amazing, but not at all required.

Thank you, to those of you who vote, it means a lot to me, as this is, and has been for some time, a dream of mine.

Since my last post, my Dad has gone into surgery, and come out safely on the other side, though there were times when it was looking rough.  The doctors and nurses were saying he was one of the strongest people they had ever met.

Unfortunately, the same day my dad went in for surgery, one of my best friends passed away after a long battle with HIV and Hepatitis.

He lead a full life that was far too short, but left a legacy that will continue in his honour.

2012 will see a lot of work in his memory.  I have his initials tattooed on my wrist to remind me of his friendship and strength.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Roughly 7 hours from writing this, my Dad will have a hole in his head with a bunch of men in scrubs, face-masks and brain-gloves hovering above him.

roughly 2 weeks ago he had a stroke due to a small aneurysm .  When they scanned his head at the hospital, they found a larger aneurysm hiding behind his eye, and surgery is the only option.

Its been a rough couple of weeks, since he lives in Pittsburgh, USA, and I live in Vancouver, Canada

If I can swing it financially, I'll be hoping to fly down sometime in the next month or two to see him.  I talked to him tonight, and he assured me he was going to be ok...

But I can't help but worry.

I finally chose a name to win the print I had offered in my past journals.  The lucky winner is Lythera who has two weeks to claim the prize, or its just gone. ;)

I've been quite busy with a recent new job, and anyone who needs new camera gear in Vancouver can send me a note and I will tell them exactly where I work so they can come in and try and buy new gears here and there.  Working full time in sales again is quite a difference to what I was doing before, shooting most nights and lazing around most days, and I really enjoy having something to do during the days.  Imagine that, exact opposite of normal work, hey?

Anyways.  I am looking at what the near future will bring, and I am going to make 2012 a big year.  I've been slowly saving for a Leica M9, and will be taking it (hopefully) and my M6 on a cruise with the girlfriend next summer.  Our planned trip is 2 weeks Mediterranean hitting Turkey, Israel, and Egypt for certain, and perhaps Italy and Greece as well.

If anyone is interested in helping, I am going to be offering a limited edition street photography book from my time in Europe and Africa, and anyone interested in pre-ordering a copy will get a hand numbered, special edition copy (with special edition cover and hand written captions, plus all the other cool things I can do) as well as a 1/1 8x10 print from negative shipped in the front cover.

Prices and specs at this point are mostly just speculation, but I expect it to be around $200-250 for a 50 page hardcover book in box limited to 25-50 units

I've already "pre-sold" 5 of them, with more interest when I can hammer out full details, how many units, and exact costs.

Other print sales from now to then will also be added to the trip, so now is the time to buy some awesome work!  Send me a note with ANY questions on any print, any size.  I'm more than happy to work around budgets, for certain things..

Cheers from a sunny end of summer? Vancouver

I leave you with a quote

"Is that an X100?"
"No, it's not"

The Stanley Cup Riots, 2011

Fuck you Thomas! Chara's a bitch! Piss in the cup get punched in the neck!  (Don't ask)  From the earliest moments of the afternoon, tensions for game seven were running high, and the rowdy tween's half drunk on the booze big brother had bought for them and half baked by the early summer sun were getting rowdier by the minute, on a packed 502 bus from Aldergrove to Surrey.  The only thing on these odd specimens from a peculiar generations mind was to party, get drunk, and "fucking party.. wooooooo! " (Quoting the gaggle of underaged girls in the back of the bus straddling their homemade tinfoil trophy).

It wasn't a stretch to think that the day could have ended badly, with whispered talk of riots spreading like wild-fires after the disappointing game three and four Canuck losses in Boston.  Throw a sunny blue sky that would rival that of our sister riot city LA, and you have a recipe for disaster.

The mood was mostly jovial, upon arriving into the downtown core an hour before the game started, with at least two brave souls walking down Georgia street in black and yellow hockey sweaters, having to dodge only a few passing insults and fiery gazes as they slinked off to watch the game.  Kids happily waved small flags and towels from their parents shoulders as the game progressed, disappointed when the game started to fall apart.  1-0.. 2-0.. 3-0..

The portion of the crowd old enough to have been Canuck fans in 1994 started backing away from the crowds in these desperate moments, taking their kids back to the train as fast as they could as the whispers of RIOT became louder amongst the crowd.

From Granville and Georgia street, the dying minutes saw a revolving door of two distinct groups of people moving away or towards the giant screens at Georgia and Homer.  Those with fear in their eyes, and those with anarchy, or just plain curiosity at what would happen.

What seemed innocent enough at first, a lynched teddy-bear on fire hanging from a hockey stick quickly escalated as the plans of out of town anarchists came to fruition.   Black sweaters and masks seemed to materialize out of nowhere on a handful of rabble rousers who wasted no time stirring the confuddled crowd into a raving mob chanting RIOT! RIOT! RIOT!

Mob Mentality, Mass Hysteria - whatever it was, it had the effects of a powerful drug.  Young men and women turned mad.  Their angst and frustrations bubbling out into the street.  Those who didn't act on urges stared in wonderment at what was happening, cell phone cameras pointed towards the chaos, forming a brick wall for the police and fire fighters trying to get through the crowd to restore order.

It was now officially out of control, and the rest as they say is history.

Seattle, New York and Prints..

Journal Entry: Sun May 1, 2011, 7:06 PM

The photograph itself doesn't interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality.

- Henri Cartier-Bresson

Seattle was definitely a blast.  I had an idea of what it would be like, and I have to say that it was almost the complete opposite.  Vancouver is generally really laid back and mild, where as Seattlle is quite lively, tho also laid back, compared to a place like New York, I imagine.

Speaking of New York, I am planning on heading to Toronto in about 6 weeks, and I want to take a little bit of time to stop in New York City, and shoot as much as I can in two-three days,  Not having a full time hob recently might derail that, however.

I have been meaning to post something about a print sale - but in the meantime, if anyone is interested, all of the photos in my gallery are available as matted 5x7's for $35 (plus shipping)

The prints would be signed on the back, and dated, and shipped in a solid envelope with cardboard and do not bend stickers.  Shipping to anywhere in North America should only run $5-10, where international should onlyl run $10-15..  Let me know if there is ANYTHING of mine that you are in love with, and we can see about decorating your walls ;)

Seattle photos coming soon.  Check my facebook fan page and website for content that wont get uploaded here!

Cheers!!
